Being told the day before flying that i was definitely business class was nice because i've heard good things and was excited. Also had 42kg of luggage spread over 2 bags for the hold so needed the 40 you get with business not 30 for economy!
When I checked in they asked how long i was going for (single ticket!) and for my visa. All new experiences.
Business class is amazing. You at no point mix with anyone else and even get your bags the other side on the belt before others. The champagne and whisky as well as the food and pretty much any film you could imagine made the flight really fast. Watched Calgary. First time I've EVER enjoyed a film where nothing happened. Great film. Brilliantly directed and produced.
Mel met me at the airport and immediately started bossing me about (she's got used to making her own decisions!) but we got me a sim - probs only temp PAYG (number +971 558935686) so you can add this to skype if you have skype credit and use when internet is bad/i'm out and about if you want (if only to arrange a skype over wifi).
I will keep my old number but not using it at the mo...
The temp apartment is nice. Its in a massive building site which is mostly a massive sandpit (go figure!) and has views of the city in the distance.
My first day, i got to the metro, got my ring polished at a jewelry workshop, saw the Burg Kalifa, stared at lots of men building a building for far too long (fascinating to see all the seemingly pointless rubbish jobs creating something that works - hopefully...), investigated the possibility of a jellyfish purchase (dead end), went to dubai mall (biggest in world-well laid out so actually easier than TC), ate an Emirati breakfast (omlette, humous, cheesy spinach bread, cream cheese, olives, crushed beans, fresh OJ and coffee-all £3), found a pomegranate tree for our new balcony, tried to speak the lingo (very hard here with everyone speaking English and most of the service people Filipino or Indian).
It was low-mid 30 degrees at the peak although i got a bit cold in the mall. It was definitely a dry heat because I hardly sweated, although i'm told this isn't the case so maybe it will normally be different.
Mel got home about 4.30 and we did some UK admin before going to eat in a shitty little Indian restaurant. Very average food TBH but hey, it was a random restaurant in a shithole so wouldve been lucky...
Going to pick up keys for the new place tomorrow so excited! :) Work days here is waking up for Mel to leave at 6am then dinner about 5pm and bed by 9.30pm. I'm ready for lunch at about 11.30. Body clock does seem to have shifted instantly but we'll see...
Love to everyone back home! x
